- Challenges presented by the minerals boom can be addressed by improved utilisation of mining equipment and automated mining systems development. For both objectives, it is important to have condition monitoring systems in place to provide real-time information about the equipment condition and prevent it from a catastrophic failure. A big share of open cut mining equipment is driven by DC motors. An ambitious project has been set up between CRCMining and industry partners that aims to develop a DC motor duty meter - a condition monitoring tool that relates the motor duty to its condition and provides an estimate of its time-to-failure. To develop the duty meter with the desired level of accuracy, a detailed investigation of the motor performance is needed. For this purpose, a unique test facility is being developed in Hunter Valley to be able to complete extensive experiments, under controlled conditions, on the full size DC motors used by industry. This paper explains about the requirements, the structure of the facility, the test methodology and the selected equipment. It also states the current progress of the facility development and presents some preliminary results.
